For Bob

I was chastised for my lack of knife photos by our good friend, Bob. So, here you are Bob.

Please excuse my awful photography. I still use a Blackberry.

I collect 'Old Timer' USA made knives...I'm far from rabid in my hobby (I have about two gazillion hobbies) but once in a great while I 'get a bug' to buy.  Here are three that fell into my lap of recent.

Above: See, Bob, focus is awful. Anyhow, this is the first model year (1962) of the Schrade-Walden Old Timer 15OT. As you well know, Schrade dropped the Walden in 1973. If you find an Old Timer with the Schrade-Walden brand, grab it. Please don't droll. Oh, carbon steel.

Above, the top is an Improved Muskrat 77OT. She's nothing special but she's mine. The bottom is my daily pocket knife carry, a little three blade 34OT, razor sharp. Well, heck, all my knives are razor sharp. I hate dull tools.

The Muskrat open. Distinctive by its almost equal blades. See the metal stain, I love it as it reflects the blades carbon steel. Hate stainless. Even though 'stainless' means the blade 'stains less.'

Here the Sharp Finger cased. The old leather has a wonderful scent. She's sharp enough to cut one's soul.

My other daily, outside the pocket, carry. A Benchmade Mel Pardue 154CM.

There you are, Bob.

Stephen

  1. I've got a 34OT sitting in my pocket just waiting for the next call to duty. There is nothing like a sharp knife, useful in so many ways to remind me of my American heritage.

  2. I've lots of knives, but sadly no schrades. My first pocket knife was an old timer when I was a boy.

Now you're making me want to look for old shrade knives at the flea markets this spring. Damnit, Stephen :)

    2. Paladin, I forgot to mention Schrade went out of business in 2004. All new Old Timers are now made in China....which sucks big time.

  3. I wish I know what happened to my Sharp Finger. Loved that little knife. Lost in one of my moves, I guess.

    1. That is sad. This one, the 15OT is the bigger version of your little Sharp Finger...now you too can scout the flea markets. Thanks, my friend.

  4. Thanks for the shout-out, Stephen. ;-)

I've always been more of a knife nut than a gun nut. I have three Schrade knives, two of them Old Timers made of carbon steel. One of them is the little locking 1-blade trapper, the other is the dropped-point version of the Sharp Finger. I have a stainless Sharp Finger that Smoky Mountain Knife Works made from Schrade factory remnants.

A Sharp Finger was the first sheath knife I ever owned, one of the very first of the "Schrade Scrimshaw" models that the company put out. wish I still had that one.

    1. You're welcome, Bob. I do so love my knives but firearms have a hold on me. I've more blades than the average man needs, much less use. I tend to switch them out and carry a different one each month. I always have my Benchmade on me but my pocket needs a different companion from time to time. Thanks, my friend. And, yes, shame about losing the Scrimshaw.
