Just A Tip

If, you have AVG Security and it sends out an expiration date and states it's time to renew your license, do not click on the renew button. Instead use Google and search for their main site and renew there.

Trust me.

I just spent close to two hundred dollars in tech fees, and several hours, to get my computer back to normal.

Irony, when your computer catches a virus from the program which claims to protect you from such events.

Sorry you had to go through that, Stephen. I dumped AVG two years ago on the advice of my grandson, a super-duper computer wiz. It's a shame when a company that you used to trust and depend on turns evil.

    1. Funny thing is I understand AVG is one of the highest rated out there and recommended by all my tech geeks. Strange how things change. Thanks, Phyllis.

  2. That stinks worse than a dead skunk on the side of the highway at noon in the hot sun!

Try Avast, it is top rated and I use it on all my PC's.

  3. My wife just did the "click-click-click" when it told her it was out of date, and not reading all the boxes as she went through them all, it "upgraded" her PC to the PAID version.
I did a complete uninstall, ran CCleaner, rebooted, and the reinstalled the free version.
mmase....ZoneAlarm is just a firewall. It won't protect you from some of the real nasty stuff out there.

    1. kymber, sweet one, it wasn't an email. It was my current program giving me a 'count down' for my license renewal that I clicked...thanks, sweetheart.

  6. I get those little pop ups from time to time, too. Funny, I've heard that most of the viruses out were created by the very companies that sell security to protect your from them.

    1. It is a shame. The company did state it was a problem with the renewal countdown system..when it tells you its time to renew your license. Thanks, my lovely friend.

  7. Actually, the pop-up notification was probably malware, designed to *look* like an AVG message.

I had a similar thing happen with Microsoft Security Essentials last week, and immediately changed my antivirus software. I had to give up AVG a couple years ago because it became incompatible with a program I needed to run daily for my job.

  8. sorry stephen - these kind of things are a real pain.

i have only had one virus, working in IT helped me keep ahead of the trends. now that programs regularly notify users of updates, these kinds of messages are common (adobe reader seems to have an update every day ;-) and now so are viruses/malware that looks like them.

my advice to anyone is NEVER click a pop-up that asks you to do something immediately.. legitimate software notifications always give you the options of "do something later" or "cancel".

  9. OMG! The SAME message came across my husband's computer this morning. Not being savy, he yelled from the other room if he should click "Clean and Check" or not. I ran in and looked at the url. It said: "microsoftpurequeerinvestigator.com"

  10. Wow...I guess the real tip here is...check the url!

  11. Thats usually a virus not the software itself...guess I'm about to find out though, my FIL just called to say his was doing that so we're off to take a look.

    1. No, Ruth, it was the program. They admitted it. Thanks, my dear.

    2. Yup, it was indeed the software, somehow he'd gotten himself on the trial of the paid plan....doesn't matter how many times we tell him "don't just click on it!!!" he does anyway *sigh*. We did manage to get him back down to the freebie version with no computer messes though, which is a good thing all the way around!

  12. Thanks for the heads up...I am wondering if that is what's wrong with my computer? I even got a new router and it won't work unless unplugged and reset before trying to get on the internet. Wont' let me stay on very long and then freezes. I have AVG on my laptop not this desk top computer, but it affected both of them. Am calling the computer guy tomorrow.
    I am computer tech illiterate!!
    Oh well.......Take care, Stephen.
