The Greenhorn

He's a nice man, late middle age. Short and kinda on the chubby side. As green as green gets when it comes to firearms and the gun culture. I kid you not his name is, Jesse James.

After months of consultation he's finally ready to pull the trigger....asked, as he pointed to a notice of items for sale, "May I hold that derringer?"

Back in my office we're seated and he fondles the little baby. Its a vintage piece, nickled, chambered in .38 Special.

Then, as sincere as sincere gets, he asked, "Stephen, seriously, will this really kill someone if I shoot them with it?"

Stephen

  2. Ah, yes. If it's so small, then how deadly can it be?
    Heh.

Re: the header picture, I'm pretty sure that's not Florida. :)

    1. I'm sure that's what he thought. Now on that nice picture...how'd you guess. I believe it was taken in northwest Canada. Not sure. I like it....

  3. Pretty little guns still shoot ugly fast bullets.

Judging from your header I'm thinking you are missing cool mountain air this time of year.

    1. I miss mountain air, and snow, and cold steady winds, and nights with my windows open to the sound of trees snapping in sub-zero weather, and....so much more. Oh, frozen beaver ponds...and, well, other stuff too.

    2. Goodness, I have never even experienced those things, but I am pretty sure I would not miss them. If the windows were open under those conditions, I would have multiple layers on, even in bed.

  4. At least the Greenhorn is starting to make the transition to law-abiding constitutional citizen!

  5. I am almost as green as your green horn, except I have fired a weapon once a .22 at a range so so many years ago. Love the mountain photo. They had snow west last night 14" in one town. Its coming almost as fast as a pack of liberals after free money.

  6. Ok I'm so green I'm blue. I have never even held a gun. Will it really kill someone? I figure if it is straight to the heart it will, but other places???

    1. Kristine, quick answer, yes, if the shot placement is prefect - heart, head, or to those parts of the body where the bullet nicks a major artery, and if first aid isn't given immediately. The .38 Special was used for almost a hundred years by our countries law enforcement agencies.

  7. Lots of people don't know that the 38 special was the standard handgun round for police , FBI and even some military uses for almost 80 years.

  8. Not that's funny, should have had shooter Steve there when he said that.

  9. Well if he is afraid of bullets, he can always hit someone over the head with it. Love the mountain header.

  10. The unfamiliar brings out fear or confusion in all of us. I've seen grown me flinch at the sight of a firearm. Thanks, I like the picture too.

  11. About every twenty years I fire a gun. It must be time to do so again. I don't own one. First, I fired Daddy's shotgun a few times. The next time I fired a pistol belong to husband who later held it cocked and loaded to my head. Then, I fired a rifle belonging to a guy so I could enter a turkey shoot. Hey, I thought we shot at turkeys not targets! I guess I am still green. If I could afford a gun, I would have one.

    1. Linda, you can afford a firearm, buy used. We Americans quit using turkeys for targets about the time of my birth. I was a common practice. Thanks, dear lady.

  12. Makes you wonder how some people survive long enough to reproduce doesn't it? What's up with Da Pimp? You haven't mentioned him in a while.

    1. Trust me, Double, I've dealt with the general public a long, long, time and I ask myself that question everyday....mushrooms. Anyway, as to the Pimp...he now has a bunk at Florida State Prison. Home invasion, attempted murder, and several other charges. I don't expect to see him again. At least not in my lifetime.

  13. I'm not entirely sure I'd want to be around that gentleman if he had a gun. He does not inspire confidence.

  15. When he comes back to buy it, sell him a speed loader to go with it.

A newby once asked me if I had a silencer for my revolver.

    "Yes"...."It's called a pillow"
