Snippets

It's very quiet here at home. My lovely wife is off to her hair lady and since I don't watch much television I hear every little sound. So very soothing.

My doctor requested I take today off. When I mentioned this to Sweet Wife she reinforced his request. I did as ordered. Let me tell 'ya, prescription sleep medication works. The doctor, a nice younger man, gave me a bag full of sleep medication. Has little butterflies on the package. Nice stuff.

My head hit the pillow and the next thing I knew it was 0900. I felt true guilt. I bet when my shop next opens I'll never hear the end of it.

I recently bid and won a neat little Coleman Peak 1 backpack stove. It arrived yesterday. My lovely friend DFW had just dropped by for a visit. I unpacked the little booger as we chatted. The little one burner stove should come in very handy. My friend and I spoke of many things. Estate sales (she's a junky for them) books, and her big weakness, primitive kitchen and decorative items. She's a nice and lovely lady. Her husband owns a business just down the street from my shop. He's cool too, he's a gun freak like me.

As soon as Sweet Wife gets back from the hair butcher we'll head out for a little per-hurricane shopping. I need to restock batteries and a few other staples. Even though I have hundreds of gallons of water set aside in blue barrels I like to have a few cases of bottled water on hand. This next week should prove to be very interesting. I worry about all the trees we have around our home, and pray to the good Lord the trees remain in place and upright.

I shall also top off our vehicles gasoline tanks. There again, I have a barrel of gasoline stored and treated but why tap into it when it isn't necessary. I keep the stored gas on reserve for my generator. Which leads me to another chore...filling my five gallon fuel containers, a task made easier when rain isn't pouring down my collar.

Chicken fajitas are on the menu tonight.

If you can make it over for dinner give me a yell.

Stephen

  2. I'm so glad to hear that you got some rest, and a day off won't hurt you, either. Your posts recently have reminded me of what an old Scottish professor said in seminary: "The Bible teaches the Lord will nae put on us more than we can bear, but sometimes I wish He did nae have such a high opinion of me."

  3. Ok, here come the questions. Where does one procure a barrel to store gas? (I'm sure a barrel of gas would get me in all kinds of trouble with the local-govt. demacritters if they knew.) Did you have to buy a bunch of the little gas treatment bottles, or is gas treatment available in bulk from somewhere. Do you have any type of posted warning for firemen in case things go very wrong? See, I told you I had questions. Thanks!

    1. Anon, I don't mind questions...Okay, many years ago (20-25) people here and across the country used kerosene heaters, large ones, to heat their homes. Many used furnaces that burned kerosene (or what some refer to as fuel oil) now, those heaters required 'tanks,' and those tanks were nothing but standard fifty-five gallon barrels. These barrels were manufactured locally. They had 'bung' holes at the top with a brass insert, a lid with cover and a place to lock the top, for filling. They also had nice little brass spigots with shut off valves at the bottom. These barrels were placed on stands at a slant. When the day came the home owners moved on to central heat and air these tanks were tossed. I purchased two several years ago and gave one away to a friend and keep one. I built a simple little structure using concrete blocks and four by fours and placed the tank atop, filled it and treated the gasoline. I rotate the gas to my truck. I filled it five gallons at a time....treated each time. I use the small bottles of Stabil. (check spelling) I do not believe you can find bulk treatment but I'm not certain. No, I do not post warnings. First of all I don't give a damn about the governments rules nor is it any of their business. My tank is tucked safely away in the back corner of my yard and locked. The tank is grounded. I'm sure if you checked around you'll find one, probably still partially filled with fuel if you look. When it comes to the safety and security of my family the government can kiss my butt. I hope this helps, and hey, be careful out there and please don't be a stranger.

  4. For everyone that has a generator:

Have you fired it off lately to see if it actually will start?

  8. Just got off the phone with my dad. He's north of Tampa. The place is stocked, the car topped off, but he plans on sitting tight.

Hope you and yours have a safe time of it. I'll try not to worry too much of you go off-line for a while.

Those peak stoves are pretty nice. Had one for canoe camping. Good little stoves.

Never feel guilty about getting a little sleep. It's like feeling guilty for needing air.

Glad you slept Stephen - it really does do wonders! 'Hope you all get through the storm with no wind and water damage.
I always worry about the damn trees - we have about two hundred left still standing. Dinner looks wonderful - wish I lived closer. I'd bring home made apple pie for dessert!

    1. I'd welcome the apple pie with open arms. Wish you were here too. I do worry about the approaching storm. Just heard it will be an official hurricane by late tonight. We've done all possible to prepare. Food stores are stocked, I have four extra pounds of coffee and batteries galore. Now we pray. Thanks, my sweet friend.

  11. Even though you have stock for prepping, you need to fill the car, get a few extra of things like batteries and water. We do the same :-) Are you putting up shutters/plywood?
I'm hoping the storm just gives you a little rain and passes Florida and breaks down. Heck, I'm hoping we get some rain from this storm. We truly need it!
Stay safe and give Sweet Wife a hug :-)
