What I'm Reading & Kindle

I can hear my friends laughing. Yes, I broke down and ordered a Kindle. Here I am, the analog guy living in a digital world; the man that always made fun of the silly boys and girls with their little gray screen sitting on the sandy beaches glaring at what should be a good 'ole clothe bound book, paper, by God, with the odors of time soaked deep inside.

How will I ever live this down - me, a man with a library filled with books numbered in the thousands, now a wussy-assed Kindle owner. Lord forgive me. But, there are all those wonderful little self-published novels restricted to Kindle download, and here I am Kindle-less, the ignorant ink stained finger, paper book dinosaur.

So, a couple of days ago I sallyforthed and clicked that 'buy' button at Amazon. How I miss the time when Amazon sold books and nothing but books. I'm old, a relic.

Anyhow, here's my current read.  Forgive my poor photography.

I depart in shame.

Stephen

  1. I likewise broke down, over a year ago, and got one of those things. Reason? Because I have so many books we no longer had any place to store them, and I faced the unbearable prospect of having to get rid of some.

The Kindle allows you not only to GET books for less, but to store them on Amazon's website in virtually (get it? virtual? oh, never mind) unlimited "shelf" space. I don't regret it at all.

  2. lol! I just downloaded Kindle for PC (it was free at Amazon) and downloaded a bunch of freebie books there.

I also have thousands of REAL books! I tried to go through them all and offered some to others but no one wanted them. No school no library. sigh, guess I will have to keep em!

  3. I’m not going to point and laugh. I promise. I’m supposed to respect my elders. But really, a Kindle? Old people aren’t supposed to have technology like that. They’ll just get confused, frustrated and rant about the “good old days” when they went to school with Moses and about how they had to fight dinosaurs barefoot in the snow. We got my 94 year old grandmother a computer a few years ago with cable internet. She made a cozy to go over the computer so it won’t gather dust. I know you aren’t that old, but still, a mental image of Stephen with knitted dust cozies for his many weapons will bring a smile on my face.

  4. Rev. Paul, thanks, I'm sure I'll like it. Like you I have filled every nook and cranny in my home. I'm fairly good at building bookcases too. Wife said, enough.

Kellie, me too. Here it sits taking space on my PC and I've yet to download a single item...too busy blogging. I'd never give away my books. Little Bit will inherit them.

Mudbug, my dinosaur killing days aren't over yet. Trust me, I'll adapt. But, now that you mention it a cozy or two isn't such a bad idea. I've yet to purchase a 'book' cover for my Kindle.

  5. got one myself. Keeps me from packing a several books when I'm on the road.

downside is that with the "free" wireless, i can instantaneously order a book, something that required a little self-control to use wisely.

  6. They are great for travel, don't let the h8ers bag on you too much. I would have told you to get an iPad, but not everyone appreciates the cool-aid.

At home I just can't get comfortable reading unless it's real book.

  8. MostlyCajun, I too will need to exercise self-control. Budget in order. Thank you. BTW, I really like your blog.

Max, it strains my brain just having a PC on my desk.

    Duke, will do, Bubba.

  9. Well I did bring you out if the stone age with your phone and got you hooked onto a crackberry. Save those hard copies for SHTF or a hurricane. Its ok to embrace technology, just don't go buy an X-box.

  13. Joe, I understand. Thanks.

JUGM, don't even think it. You of all people should know better.

  15. Matt, good question. Mine has yet to arrive. I did read in the description of the model I purchased it has an experimental 'app' for web surfing. When it arrives I'll let you know.

  16. That's me. Huge reader and dead tree version owner. I'm pretty up on tech, but just stuck when it comes to books. I'll probably be given a Kindle sometime in the near future for a gift-giving event. I'll probably still wish it was a gun or ammo.

  17. Forgiven me as I am new here, but it proves that you are human, but still a GOD to many.

  18. 45er, good morning. Seems you and I have much in common. Like you 'the dead tree version' will always be my first love. Yes, for the price I paid I could have purchased several more boxes of ammo to add to my stash.

Rob's Rangers, thank you, Sir, for the compliment, but trust me, I'm only human, an average man at best writing a blog for his grandchildren.

  19. JUGM,

I think the proper term is "Metro Survivalist".

As long as you don't get NPR or Mother Earth News on it.

  20. I'm still a little leery of the Kindle. When they sucked all George Orwell back off of the Kindles that people had already downloaded(due to a royalty/copywrite issue) the irony got too rich for my blood.

  21. Odysses, the Kindle download for Animal Farm and other Orwell works are available at Amazon as I write this. I do however share your distrust. Thanks.
