Ah, Just Sweat

Fact: We live in Florida, and our state is hot and humid. Air conditioning is required. If you don't believe me, try living here without it. Within a week mold will cover your walls. You'll find yourself shucking clothes the moment you walk inside the front door. Indoor pets have been known to commit suicide. The very air you breath is heavy with moisture. Step into your garage and within seconds your body glistens with beads of water. Plain and simple, it sucks.

We're on our forth day without this wonderful life saving system of Mr. Carrier. Our new five ton system was installed less than eight years ago. The compressor in our Carrier is supposed to be under warranty. As such we've had to wait until the local contractor received approval from Carrier with assurances they would indeed honor their warranty, otherwise we'd eat the bill for a new fan compressor. Our quoted estimate was a bit over two thousand dollars, not including labor, coolant, and of course, taxes. (Just received word, the part has been deemd worthy of warranty, thus saving us a few bucks.)

Here's the catch. The part is located in Orlando and if it arrives by 1500 today a fix might take place Monday. After 1500 the nice lady said possibly Tuesday. Here's the thing...the first hot humid air of the season (We're well into Summer here.) arrives, tomorrow. I shall practice the sweat drip dance and make extra ice for sweat (not sweet) tea.

Now where oh where did I hide my loin clothe.

  1. Sticky summer weather without A/C? Ugh ... makes me so glad, once again, to be in Alaska where a "hot" summer day approaches 75°.

Y'all come on up & see us, hear?

  2. Sunny and 65 here yesterday. Mowed the lawn & didn't break a sweat. Not like the old days in Lutz! Spend some time here on your way to Alaska!

  3. 51 in the frozen tundra of MN, and our snow is a distant memory. I miss Florida, but not the heat & humidity of summer.

  4. You have our sympathies. Perhaps now would be a good time to pick up a backup window air conditioner for the bedroom.

    1. Our home was designed and built to withstand hurricanes. Windows are too narrow for window units....darn it.

  5. What did folks do before air conditioning? I know Florida was settled before 1950, wasn't it? Come and visit us in Oregon's high desert....65 degrees today with 15% humidity.

    1. They and we suffered with window fans. Yes, Florida has the oldest/first settlements in this country with St. Augustine holding the honors. Plymouth Rock hasn't a thing on us....and, A/C was invented here.

  6. No possibility of a window unit to cool a single room, Stephen?

    1. Nope, windows to narrow. We have sets of French doors around the house and those are backed by storm doors.

  8. Stephen,

Lived in Florida for over 25 years, I do know exactly what your talking about with the heat and humidity. Do you have a friend or neighbor who has a portable window unit you can borrow until you have the compressor fixed?

If not, it maybe worth your while to pickup one at Walmart for under $100 buck and put in your window.

    1. Sadly our home will not accommodate window units.

  9. I promise never again to whine about our cold weather. Your heat and humidity trumps my ice and snow. I can always put on more clothes to be comfortable, but there is only so much you can take off without getting arrested.

  10. So what ya gonna do when TSHTF? I admit we use the AC up here starting around June usually but truthfully only because one of us has to be able to sleep and go to work. Even in July and August I could adapt because the night time temps are usually comfortable enough to sleep but you might have to wait until 1 or 2 AM.

All jokes aside as a child we adapted. Just as I've adjusted to luxury as an adult and I don't like to sweat....

  11. At least the compressor is covered, although it's a crappy thing to deal with. Compressors are supposed to last much longer than that, but then again, if they built them to last too long, they can't make money on selling new units, which need a new refrigerant and another ton of money from licensed technicians that are forced to remain current to keep their license.

Meanwhile, in Loraslaborgia, nobody gives a rodent's fanny about the ozone and they still use the R-12 and R-22 they outlawed in the United States.

They probably received a discount and the producers raised their prices on our stuff to cover their losses.

    1. Buttholes quoted forty dollars a pound for Puron. Needs between fifteen and twenty-five pounds. Then their disposal fees...pure ripoff.

    2. Refrigerant 410A costs about $4 pound in 25 pound cylinders.

I can understand marking it up 15%, but charging ten times the bulk price seems a little steep.

  12. I have a cousin who lives in Leesburg FL, and she and her husband don't have a/c. They've lived there a long long time, and I have no idea how they do it. Or better yet, why they do it!

  14. With my allergies to everything under the sun and moon, I would not live a long life or pleasant life without ac. Go buy a cheapie and put it in the bedroom. Even up here in AL, it gets miserable, but I am sure you have it worse.

  15. That's rough. Sorry to hear it. I use window units. When they crap out I just deep six them and buy another one.

  16. I wish...we chunk this unit and it's about eight grand down the toilet.
