Grub

What's for dinner. Well, this dish. I haven't eaten macaroni and tomatoes with Audouille sausage since, well, the last time my mother whipped it out for me, and let me tell 'ya, that was a long time back.

Give it a try. Its quick and simple and very tasty. And hey, don't forget the butter....

You can thank me later.

Stephen

  1. Good eats!

My dad still eats some odd stuff from his childhood. Times were hard. For a depression era meal, this is good eating. Heck, with the sausage, it's not a depression meal at all. It's eating "fancy."

    1. Times were hard for me too as a child. My mother and father divorced when I was about twelve. Times were lean. For a while we survived on squirrel and rabbit and I still miss those simple tasty meals. Have a great time with your family and tell your father I said hello. Thanks, my friend.

    1. Okay, it's 1700 here, get the water boiling. If you need sausage, yell.

  3. We all have a habit of making each other hungry. This looks good, may have to try some time. We are having home made stew, slow cooked. Wife started the meat last night and added the rest this am.

    1. I built a stew late this afternoon. It began with a rue which takes at least thirty minutes to bring to the proper shade...but, it makes all the difference in the flavor. Thanks, Rob.

  4. Stephen - we grew up on a similar dish that my mom made...all the same ingredients except the andoille was replaced with ground beef...and don't forget that extra pat of butter! now you got me wanting this but i just made a big pot of super-spicey pumpkin soup and we have thanksgiving dinners scheduled for the next 2 days - woohoo! turkey, smashed and gravey baby! but once we have eaten all of the leftovers, our 2 families always send us home with garbage bags of leftovers...i'll be making some of this!!! enjoy. and take a pic of yours please!

    your friend,

    1. We spent a few days in Canada and enjoyed your Thanksgiving with a fine seafood meal...ah, let me think, oh heck, the town is famous for its chocolate, just over the border from East Port, Maine...ah, never mind...anyway, the whole friggin town shut its doors. We still had fun. About the pictures, oops, sorry, its gone. I have, though, a stew on simmer...its for tomorrow. Thanks, Sweetheart, and tell your fishing buddy hello for me.

  6. When I was a child we had this with a generous, it seemed to me, amount of ground beef. We all loved it. I don't recall our being particularly poor when eating this. Once after I divorced, I had some elbow macaroni, a can of tomatoes and enough ground beef for one hamburger. I cooked it all together and took it for lunch the next day. Women who were quite comfortable and had expensive lunches were drooling over my last meal. Seriously, it was the last of my food. I took it the next day and everyone proclaimed I was a wonderful cook as they ate expensive food for lunch. I never told them it was the last of my food. I think I melted the last of my cheese in this, too. It has been 35 years since then, and to this day I have never cooked it again. Even though I can still smell and taste it, the experience left me with a bitter memory. I might just cook this one day.

    1. Great story, Linda, thanks. Some of the finest dishes this country has produced came from the severity of our depressions, meals from scrapes.

  7. I fix this when we need to really entertain the child in us. I make a large batch because it's better the next day. I make stewed tomatoes instead of using just diced tomatoes, then pour it in and let it all sit and meld. The sausage LOVES the sweetness of the stewed tomatoes.

    1. The sausage just seems to work but I'd make it with chicken too....thanks, Joy.
