For what it's worth. A buddy of mine works as a paramedic in a city with lots of gang shootings. He says he loses more patients to .22 shootings than to any other caliber.
It was inconclusive. Or you could say it was conclusive in that all handguns were found to be deadly. The results were rather variable depending on which criteria you used.
I was under the impression that the Europeans used the centerfire .25 rather than the rimfire .22 because of the reliablity issue. However, a couple of shots from behind to the back of the head at two feet will likely be deadly in either case.
Many European nations issued the 7.25x25, a far more powerful round. The bullet is fast and flat shooting...do not underestimate the .22...it'll hurt 'ya.
Uh, wow. I will not dismiss the .22 as a defensive round, OTOH, I will not praise it either. He does point out some statistics, but I don't know the data set. Is ANY Firearm better than a stiff word and rolled up newspaper in a SHTF situation? Sure.
I would say that if I had one choice for a caliber to take in a survival situation, it would be the .22 with a ton of LR and short ammo. I think you could carry enough .22 ammo in a backpack to last a decade.

ReplyDeleteI believe it. I've seen, up close and personal, the damage done by a .22 round. It isn't pretty.
DeleteI believe it; I'm still carrying a .45, but I practice enough to get hits center-mass. We all know that many don't practice at all.

DeleteOne big advantage of the 22 handgun is they are extremely compact and can be easily concealed. Like he said at the end, nothing beats a shotgun.
