I have one corner of our garage dedicated to old and fairly new ammo cans, not quite as large a pile as in years past. I've relocated quite a bit of it...for obvious reasons. Over time my home stash had spread out and had become a pain in my path. I began to sort and clean and re-stack. The owls kept me company, their hoots soothing, as I worked. It was peaceful.
During my labors of organizing this disarray imagine my surprise when I come upon a cardboard box filled with over a thousand rounds of 5.56. A wonderful gift of treasure I'd completely forgotten. I stood there like a statue for several seconds, and could not for the life of me remember when and how I'd acquired this unexpected extra thousand or so rounds.
Then, I find a plastic bag and pulled it from the stack and find inside about fifteen boxes of defense shotgun loads...double and single ought buckshot. I'd forgotten it, and again, have no idea how I acquired it. Thank goodness I had a couple of empty ammo cans.

Dani, I'm a fairly good wing shot, but duck hunting with buckshot is difficult at best, and impossible for most people. This ammunition is for defense purposes only...thank you, my nice friend.
DeleteI love re-discovering useful things that had been forgotten, like a $20 bill in a jacket pocket. But that much ammo ... now that's a wonderful thing.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Matt. Wish the find had helped with my sleep, but alas, not to be. It was a difficult night and this morning and afternoon I have several obligations. I leave soon to get my granddaughter. Then, a long afternoon of parks, and dinner. I shall be weary to say the least, very soon.

ReplyDeleteTrust me, in twenty years or so, sleep will become very precious....my gain of ammo was sweet...must have found, with the shotshells, an extra 1,500 or so extra rounds. I still half a pile to explore...

ReplyDeleteOh yes, my friend, we have owls up the bung here...little ones, big ones, you name it. No, I live in a quiet heavily wooded area of the city on the river next to a wildlife preserve. It's beautiful and at any given time of day I'm likely to find wildlife such as raccoons, possums, and other critters on my back deck. Squirrels by the hundreds. The owls here hoot most of the night along with the whippoorwills nightly song now that's it's Spring. I wish I did live out in the country, but I'll settle for what I have and thank God for it. Thank you, Groundhog.

ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose, a Colt. I once owned a nice custom Colt HBAR (heavy barrel) and she shot like a dream...truthfully though, a standard Bushmaster is as good as any, other than the custom really pricey brands. I also like my AR's simple. All the fancy added gadgets are window dressing. Scopes are fine but break, lights are nice but require batteries which die when one most needs them, don't become dependent on gewgaws...
ReplyDeleteThat's good advice, there. I have a Bushmaster and the only jam I have had in thousands of rounds was ammunition related. Optics and lights are good, but have a backup. Co-witness the BUIS and have a handheld light handy. I'm glad I learned on iron sights first, then put on an optic.
DeleteJust curious. I run a DPMS and always hear everyone carry on about the "Tier 1" guns like BCM, but to be honest I've run hundreds through mine with very few problems. I do use an EOTech, with magpul backups,and love it. I just wonder where the difference really comes when you pay that much for an AR. Tolerances, materials? Mine has all the same components and steel types. I've added a few goodies, but nothing crazy. Just wondering...

DeleteNot as related to your post, but my hubby's birthday is Tuesday and he asked for a .22. I don't know much about these things and don't want to be taken advantage of when I walk in a store so any tips on what to be wary of, what's good, etc.?
ReplyDeleteIf he wants a rifle, may I suggest a 'Ruger 10/22.' If you have a local Wal-Mart that sells firearms you can get one there for just a bit over two hundred dollars. Any good local gun store will have them for a bit more. A case of .22's (ammunition) will cost about eighteen dollars. Yell if you need more help.
