Say it ain't so: One of the cheapest sandwiches you can make at home soon won't cost so little.

The cost of one of the cheapest sandwiches in the brown-bagger's repertoire is about to go up -- in a very big way.
J.M. Smucker Co., owner of popular brand Jif, announced a 30% price hike for November -- just in time for National Peanut Butter Lovers Month -- and it won't be the only peanut butter maker to raise prices.
Smucker says it will increase the price of the "J" part of PB&J by 4% too.
"So as consumers we're buying peanut butter for a little more than $3 a jar (and) we're going to be paying over $4 a jar when that price increase hits," Shelly Nutt, the exquisitely named executive director of the Texas Peanut Producers, told the Fox TV station in Lubbock, Texas. "And I think we're going to see it for all the peanut butter companies, not just Jif."

I got a case when it was $1.98. Wish I had bought more! It's $2.98 on sale now.
ReplyDeleteBoo! That's one of teeny tiny's favorites. It's a good thing I'm not a fan of the stuff.
ReplyDeletePB isn't the only food item to be stocking up on. Predictions everywhere point towards high inflation very, very soon. I wrote a short piece about stocking up today on my blog, too. They say, great minds think alike.

Kris, That was a good deal, shame you nor I shall see those prices again, and thanks for the comment.
ReplyDeleteKitchen Witch, understand, I'm a big fan. Cheap meals. I eat one for breakfast. Thanks, good to see you again...
Rose, I'm just now home, it's almost nine pm, so I haven't had a chance to read much yet but will make a point to read your post. Yes, great minds think alike and if you ever see me write, stock up, it means everything and then one more. Thanks.
PB is a good food to have, excellent source for a lot of nutrients and protein.
ReplyDeleteI have been stocking up on PB all ready....(as my daughter walks by shaking her head in amusement)
ReplyDeleteSay it ain't so! PB is sweet ambrosia. Darn. You're right. Time to stock up some.
ReplyDeleteI prefer apple butter myself the wife however eats ton of PB. In fact I think if she stopped buying it their sales numbers might noticeably decline a bit.
ReplyDeletepb is aweseome - tastes great, loaded with nutrients, protein, fat and carbos...
ReplyDeletea real downer to see this much of an increase on such a versatile and (previously) cheap staple.
thanks stephen, we'll be double stocking pb this week!
Georgia's peanut crop was just about totaled by the drought. New Mexico's crop was very small this year as well due to the heat. I saw a short blurb on the weather channel and they alluded to the devastating effects of the weather this summer on peanuts and the price increases in the pipe line. I bought two cases of Jiffy peanut butter that afternoon. It's just a stop gap measure. Food is going higher and higher. Campbells condensed soup at the nearest Walmart was $1.65 cents a can last week.
ReplyDeleteDuke, very true. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWarlock, me too. Thank you.
45er, and stack it deep. Thank you.
PioneerPreppy, I tend to eat lots too. If these prices continue to rise we may all be eating apple butter.
Jambaloney, you're welcome and thanks.
Arsenius, combine this increase with the rest and a simple trip to the market requires a second mortgage. Soup, simple soup for a buck sixty five is beyond me. Lord help us all. Thank you for the comment.
I have either peanut butter or almond butter daily on toast for breakfast or as half a sandwich for an afternoon snack. Thanks for the heads up. Time to stock up.
ReplyDeleteBrigid, like you I have peanut butter for a daily breakfast with my coffee. You're welcome. Thanks for the comment.
ReplyDeleteBeware of the increase in fillers too. Too much sugar and stuff to increase weight without food value.
ReplyDeleteI make my own creamed soups, its really very easy. Guess I should post a recipe, Arsenius? Dammed if I'll pay a $1.65 for a can!
Brawny, thank you for the insight...haven't thought of it that way. And, heck yes, post the recipe.
ReplyDeleteBrawny, forgot, I'm reading your novel on Kindle now...I like it...Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI hate PB. My wife loves it. Therefore, I have a case in the loft.
