Thunder

Heed the thunder and listen to it sing, Wild Bill Hickok.

You should hear the thunder. Our house is silent otherwise as she reads and I type and now the lights flicker and the rain pounds hard against our roof. Our old cat cowers beneath my chair.

I thought about building another pot of coffee but I'm just too lazy to move, afraid I'll miss the show with the business of the measure and pour.

I like thunderstorms. There is something primaeval about storms that make me want to curl under a blanket and listen as the rain lulls me into sleep. Yet I settle comfortably in my chair satisfied with  book and hot drink.

The winds have increased and small limbs and pine cones fall and smack the roof followed by the deep boom of another clap and the grayish green lightning flashes and brightens our world. The cat whimpers.

The outside temperature has now dropped to seventy-five. God's air conditioner gives respite from this horrid heat. I said thank you.

Now if you'll excuse me I believe I shall pull up my foot stool and read to nature's music.

  1. Stephen,

Beautiful picture of the storm rolling in.
This weather makes for good reading and sleeping. Stay dry, relax, enjoy your read and hot beverage.

    1. After twenty minutes or so of the sound of downed tree limbs it was hard to relax. Another day of work just fell in my yard. Thank you for the kind compliment, my sweet Sandy.

  2. Yes, my friend ... cool air feels wonderful against the dark humid night. We don't get many nights like this in August.

    1. Deb, I hate August. September isn't much cooler but I like its implications. Thanks, my dear friend.

  3. I love the way you've described the storm; I miss thunderstorms, and feel about them the same way you do. Something about violent weather makes me feel more alive ... some folks think I'm nuts, but I love it.

Enjoy, and glad to hear it cooled off, too.

    1. It was fun, other than the work it brought my way. Thanks, my friend.

  4. Love a good thunderstorm! Love it when the windows shake. And the best part is the sweet scent of fresh air and clean earth after it's over. Renewal time.

  6. Uh. . . excuse me. I got a little distracted by the opening greeting in one of the comments...

My mom and dad used to stand on the porch and watch the storms move across the fields. Then Joe and I did the same thing. But thunderstorms were a rarity in Indiana. Down here, we sit out front and watch the lightening clear to Brooksville!! Wow. This land is FLAT!

Thunder is so soothing and tranquil. It's a beautiful sound to hear rumbling on. I'm not crazy about wind, but I DO love the thunder in Florida.

(keep the pad on my porch chair dry)

    2. "...which opening distracted you...?"

You do have a good sense of humor, and I love it.

I heard YOUR thunder coming this way at midnight. Of course it had to compete with Joe's horrendous snores, but the long rumbling had me wide awake. I felt secretive, as I waited and was awarded with rain so hard I thought we had a tin roof! I bragged to Joe about it this morning. NOTHING is an awe inspiring as rolling thunder or what the old folks used to call "heat lightning". It's like my own personal theater.

    3. Chuckle....my wife claims my humor is as dry as an old bone. Can't beat rain for a wonderful nights rest.

  7. I am not that crazy about thunder and lightning. It is spectacular, but for the last five weeks, the thunder and lightning in the distance has been like a threat. Since it has rained every day for over a month, it is getting hard to even wonder at the majesty of it all.

You did paint a very good picture of the weather.

  8. We have one dog that drives me absolutely crazy when it thunders. She runs around whining and crawling under things she can in no way fit under reasonably.

cars back firing and fireworks set her off as well.

Glad your getting some coolness at last.

  9. Are you guys prepared at your camp for the upcoming potential rain forecasted when, what is a tropical depression hits this weekend? Upwards of 5-10 inches is expected in parts of N. FL. I remember reading about the flooding you suffered last year?. You may want to move some things to higher ground. I'll be glad when October rolls in.

    1. Izzy, in truth we're about as prepared as possible. There isn't much we can do other than stack provisions and gear as high as possible. Last year was very difficult and expensive. Let's pray the storm is gentle.
