Schrade

I have this thing about knives. I own more than I'll ever need, yet I still make excuses to collect one more example when the urge hits me.

I cannot pass on any fine example of an American made Schrade Old Timer. I like the early Old Timer Walden models. If you're interested, Google it, as I'll not take the time to explain the history of Schrade knives. The company went out of business in 2004. Any current knife with the Schrade logos are now made in China. If you find USA or USA NY stamped at the base of the blade it's fine, and should never have stainless blades.

Anyhow, found this baby late last evening.

She's a Muskrat model 787 with nickle/silver bolsters. Rare. I hope to own her very soon. Silver....
can you believe it, they actually used silver in her bolsters. She isn't from the Old Timer line but that's fine with me. She'll look nice in my collection.

Hey, I know. Boring stuff. I'm just excited.

Stephen

  1. Nickel Silver ain't silver. Not that you can't find knives with silver furniture, but mass-produced factory knives don't use it. I have a friend who's a knifesmith, changed over in mid-life from custom jewelry. He routinely uses sterling silver in his Scottish knives (dirks and sgian dubhs).

  2. Is not Boring. Is KNIVES!!!!

I'm addicted too. Can't help myself. The disease is contagious... I've infected Mrs. Paladin and she's almost as bad as I am.

    1. I do enjoy collecting, although it's a fickle hobby where I can go years in between a purchase. I like to find my knives in the wild...but, on occasion, ebay will suffice. Thanks, my friend.

  3. I had one of those when I was in the Navy. Haven't seen one in years, though. It was a decent tool.

  4. Heh, An Old timer for an "old timer" ????

I keep one in my pocket for EDC. It's a newer Chinese one of course, but it works.

    1. I'm not (I hope) officially an Old Timer yet, but I'm darn close to it. But yes, to answer your question.
Chinese is better than nothing. Most folks walk the streets and roads of this country with nary a knife. I just don't understand it. Thanks, Matt.

Oh, did I recently read you have heard from our friend, a hermit, in North Georgia?

  5. Oh heck, another old name tool now made in China?

Never make an excuse for getting a new knife. Then again, my lovely wife has started to look at me funny when I pick up another new one.

    1. Yes, it's a shame isn't it. Schrade went bankrupt back in 2004. They sold the name 'Old Timer' to some outfit in Ireland...from there it was all downhill.

I just forget to tell my wife.

  8. I bought a couple of OT 180t locking pen knives when you still could get the good ones. Nice for going to town. I also have a nice collection of various knives. Agreed, you can't have too many. I've got a Camillus #69 in my pocket right now. Another classic!

    1. Indeed...I like the Camillus. Had one, all metal, when I was a child. I was a pure terror. Thanks, my good friend.

  9. Wow! Thanks for posting about this. I recently found a couple of my late husband's knives and one of them is like the picture. I remember him carrying it in his pocket..it must be at least 35-40 years old as it was well used when we got married 30 years ago. I will be looking it up to see if it is an 'old timer'. Thanks, Stephen!

    Blessings!

  10. my dad has the same disease. Except it is with Western knives. He has me trained to ask at all flea markets and yard sales for knives and to see if they have any Western knives. Now I know to find the number, check out the condition and price before I call him. Then he has to check his inventory to see if he has one.
I get to be his favorite daughter for a day when I bring him one home! He's 80 and still collecting!! :)
