Oh, no

Okay, I still feel like death warmed over but I'll relate this:

I drive home tonight and as I make my turn into the driveway I see our garage door is open. I think, great, Sweet Wife is home. Normally she's the last through the door by a wide margin.

Then, as I get close enough to see inside the garage my heart drops. Her car isn't parked inside. The garage light is out. Not good.

I step out and quickly scan the garage. My range bag is still on the bench. The tools are where they should be, as is my tool box. The lawn mower is parked in its normal space. I pull my carry piece and open the door to the laundry room and walk into the house.

In our family room my old double barrel shotgun still sits atop the fireplace mantle. The widescreen and sound systems are in place. Quick as a cat I rush to check my gun safe...it too is fine and in place, unmolested. Then into our office - all is well. Still I clear the house, one can never be too careful.

When my stress level has lowered, and with a few deep breaths, it hits me. One of us had not properly lowered and locked the garage door, and it wasn't me...

Our home stood unlocked and unprotected all fricking day. Thank goodness our house is located in a quiet area far from the busy streets.

I haven't said a word to Sweet Wife. She doesn't need the stress nor guilt. We had a quiet dinner and now she's at church in bible study.

Tomorrow, I'll make sure I stay behind and lock the house....my heart doesn't need this kind of workout.

Now, if you'll excuse me I need to sharpen a couple of my new (old) knives.

Take care.

Stephen

  2. Glad to hear it wasn't a break in. Scary though but you at least were level headed enough to not say anything and take the proper precautions for the future.

    1. Trust me, I made sure the door was down and locked this morning. Thanks, my friend.

  3. Wow, darlin. I can hear the sound of your heart dropping as you saw the empty garage. I can't understand NOT telling your wife. She would be so relieved to know how well you handled the situation. Having my guns stolen, yet the gun safe left behind, all I can ask is "did you OPEN the gun safe?".

    1. If I tell her she'll just cry and fret forever. No, if they had by chance been able to open my safe I'm sure the thieves wouldn't have taken the time to close it. Thanks, Sweet Joy.

  4. Stephen,

Thank God, you and Sweet Wife were not victims of a break in. I would just mention to your wife briefly about how the door was open, just so she pays a little more attention to that specific door.

    1. Thank you, Sandy...thinking about it...maybe, nah. She'd just freak out. I'll take the responsibility of locking the house.

  7. Consider yourself lucky... My garage got cleaned out the 'one' time that happened to me. Thankfully the interior steel door to the house was locked.

  9. All's well that ends well. My hubby tried to burn the house down a few days ago. Failed.
Not much of a cook, but he's sweet.

  10. Had that happen to us today. Hit the garage close button as I pulled out, watched it close behind me in the mirror till it was at least 3/4 closed and then pulled out.....came home to an open garage. Arg. Turns out the cold is screwing with the motor, there's a knob we need to adjust *sigh* so its mostly closing and then something twigs and it opens back up.

  11. Thanks for mentioning the cold factor...I hadn't considered it just might be a problem with the motor...

    Thanks, Ruth.
