Its a Dell, and its less than two years old and cost me close to nine hundred dollars, new. Last night I sat it aside to run a quick errand and when next I hit the fire control the sucker gave me a beep code. Six beeps - processor failure. Now, it takes about twenty hits of the power button, on and off, to fire this sucker to life.
A quick search of the web informs me I need to trash it.
So tell me, what brand of laptop do you recommend? I only use this critter when I'm home or on the road and do require wi-fi. Any ideas...
p.s., if I fail to reply to your comments remember this computer is close to death. I shall reply from my office tomorrow morning.

A couple of years ago I bought sweety an Acer netbook and she's loved it. No problems(windows XP). Bought my folks an Acer 17"(Windows 7)and they've had no issues despite the fact that they are 'puter illiterate and manage to fill it with junk. They are inexpensive-comparitively-and if they fail, move on to the next one. My two cents. Hope you had a good Christmas despite the techno-probs.

DeleteA $300-400 Wal-mart computer, choose your name brand..I have a Toshiba and love it. Stick with a name brand though.

DeleteGet the cheapest computer that has the features you want. Ignore brand names, they mean nothing. Most computers are built in the same nameless factories anyway. Don't be afraid to pay too little.

DeleteWhen I worked at the fire department, everyone knew I was the kiss of death for computers. So they cheered when I got a Dell, and were shocked when I sent that piece of junk back immediately.

My "kiss of death" stopped when I started buying TOSHIBA. Got one for Stud too.
I put six rounds of .45 into the sucker.....

DeleteAfter home schooling my son for 10 years (always getting the hand-me-downs from son & hubby) from '95-2005. I got to thinking--I deserve a laptop. I purchased a Sony VAIO. I've never been happier and that has been 6 or 7 years ago. I am Not upgrading...It has the perks I need. And the kids stay off of it--because they tell me it is too slow for the games. Great & Fantastic, now stay off of it! Get back with you on the particulars--I do know I am running the old Windows Vista Home Premium. Good luck. Stay away from Dell.

I had two Dell laptops, one we purchased for our son, and another I won at Christmas years ago. Both only lasted 6 months, I placed a bullet through ours. Our son took his apart for parts, and trashed the shell.

DeleteRemember to destroy your hard drive real good. Even shot to pieces they can still get stuff. When i get rid of one I usually tape it to a post and shot it with the .45 then run a magnet across the pieces. You can get a fairly cheap laptop if all you want to do is surf the web and blog you don't need anything fancy.

Deleteour DELL Is acting squirly as well.. the monitor portion keeps flickering all the time. I suspect it will be going soon too. We also have an ACER, that has been awesome. So I reccommend you look at those.

DeleteIt has been said before but let me reinforce it. The components for laptops are all made in the same few factories. The only difference is how the components are assembled, and the cosmetics of the machine. My advice (if you don't care about warranty service) is to find the features that you need, and the KEYBOARD that is most comfortable. Then buy the lowest cost machine that makes sense for you.
ReplyDeleteBetween corporate and personal use I have had several different brands over the years. It is all about features and feel.
Having been in the industry for many years, I can tell you that the guts of these machines are all pretty much the same. With most of the assembly being done robotically the quality is all pretty much the same, assuming the board designs are good.

DeleteI currently run a Samsung. In the past I've had a tank of an HP, a Sony and a Toshiba. The Toshiba gave me the least trouble, but when it did have a problem their customer service SUCKED and I was without a computer for 6 weeks while they fiddled around with it trying to get out of fixing it. We learned our lesson on that one and now only buy through Best Buy and purchase the extended warranty black tie plan. If there's a problem they take it and either fix it or give us credit toward a new computer.
ReplyDeleteThe Samsung I have now is just about two years old and the case is falling apart. I'm going to limp it along as long as I can but I'm thinking about jumping ship to Apple next time. The most common issue I have with laptops is the power jack breaking off the motherboard so their magnetic power cords are a big attraction. That and windows doesn't appear to like my iphone.
