Not a fan of the Kiaser models, but love the AMC's! Have a CJ7 and a two door Wagoneer, which is all-wheel drive with a low gear. Both have the indestructible 4.0 straight six 289 beast of a motor. Great for desert exploring, and getting home in flash floods! as I can contest to this week!
I loved Wagoneers from the moment I first saw one. While stationed in the Aleutians, 35 yrs ago, everyone was driving Land Cruisers, CJs, Broncos, Blazers, etc - but one fellow had a Wagoneer & he just cruised right along with the rest of us in those 40"-of-snow-blizzards.
Unfortunately, they priced themselves right out of the market - over $30K, thirty years ago. (sigh)
Awful expensive indeed. I can remember the old writer, Erwin Bauer of Outdoor Life used one back in the late fifties and sixties. That's when I fell in love with them. He was a photographer by trade and took some fine photos of his Wagoneer and the pics were later used in Jeep print ads. Thanks, my friend.
I love my 2000 Cherokee. Always gets me home and still can play in the dirt! Kinda shabby looking now, but most of the stuff in it works (even the cassette player) The new ones are just plastic garbage.
I think I saw one on a lot here in town a good while back. I may go and see if I can find it again. What I like about them is the lack of electronic controls on them.
I remember seeing a guy's website that sold these *completely* rebuilt. Everything that could be purchased new (hoses, belts, etc) was replaced, and all the other items were rebuilt, and were better than new owing to better technology today for things like piston rings and bearings. They weren't cheap, but then neither is a new off-the-floor car of equal capability. I've had two Grand Cherokees since 1999. One was a 1996 that I'm kicking myself for trading in on the new 2006 I bought, and they both were/are trouble-free.
A friend runs a Wagoneer restoration/resell place that is pretty amazing. I've seen some of the most amazingly pristine jeeps at his place. You would be amazed at the demand for these things from all over the world.
You might be better off with one of these :)
